  • POPFASD Literacy Initiative for High School Teachers

    The POPFASD Literacy Initiative is kicking off the year with a 6-session learning series focused on supporting reading at the high school level.

     

    This learning series will be useful for any educator who works with students in grades 8-12 - whether you're a teacher who works with students who are significantly below grade level in reading, or a content-area teacher looking to support literacy in a systematic way throughout your subject/grade level assignments.

     

    Over 6 sessions, we will:

    • Build understanding of the demands of skilled reading and why many students face barriers
    • Learn about assessment tools that can help you very quickly identify students who are at risk, make a plan to support, and monitor progress
    • Examine models for supporting students with significant reading difficulties within high schools 
    • Provide universal, Tier 1 strategies and routines for fluency, vocabulary, and syntax that content area teachers can use to help all students access content and develop their skill in reading
    • Sessions will run from 3:30-4:30 between September 17 and October 15, with one additional Tuesday session on October 22. 

     

    • Thursday September 17 - What's going on with My Readers?
    • Tuesday September 22 - Monitoring Progress
    • Thursday September 24 - Supporting Students Who Struggle
    • Thursday October 1 - Targeting Reading Fluency in Secondary Classrooms
    • Thursday October 8 - Unlocking Academic Vocabulary
    • Thursday October 15 - Strengthening Syntax

Provincial Specialist Associations


The BCTF is made up of 32 Provincial Specialist Associations (PSAs). Each PSA brings together educators who share an interest in a particular subject, specialty, or area of education. These associations provide opportunities for teachers to build professional connections, share ideas, and collaborate on topics such as instructional practices, curriculum, and other areas of common interest.


How to Join a PSA


To become a member of a PSA, simply purchase a PSA membership.


Benefits of Joining a PSA


Joining a PSA is a valuable way to stay informed about new ideas, trends, and developments in an area of teaching that interests you. PSAs offer a range of professional learning and networking opportunities, including:


  1. Conferences
  2. PSAs organize professional learning conferences at both the provincial and regional levels, with options offered both in person and online. The third or fourth Friday of October is designated for PSA Conferences. These events are made possible by hundreds of teachers who volunteer their time to plan and provide meaningful professional development for their colleagues. Teachers can explore PSA day conferences as well as other professional development opportunities offered throughout the year.

  3. Newsletters
  4. Many PSAs produce regular newsletters, either in print or online. These publications provide members with useful teaching resources, professional learning materials, classroom strategies, new ideas, and information about upcoming opportunities. Joining a PSA gives you access to these resources on an ongoing basis.


Opportunities to Contribute to the Profession


PSAs also provide educators with opportunities to contribute to the teaching profession, supporting Professional Standard #8, which emphasizes educators' responsibility to contribute to their profession.


Volunteering with a PSA is one way to share your knowledge and experience while supporting, mentoring, and encouraging fellow educators. Members can get involved in a variety of ways, such as helping at a conference, contributing an article to a newsletter, leading a workshop, or serving on a PSA executive.

Whether you volunteer for a couple of hours at an event or take on a larger leadership role, participating in a PSA can be both rewarding and enjoyable. Contact a PSA directly to find out more about available volunteer opportunities.
